Europe provides the most WC participants with 16 teams. In 12 groups (A–L) the group winners qualified directly. Four more spots were awarded in the Play-offs.

WC Qualification South America

All 10 CONMEBOL members played in a League Phase for 6 direct WC spots.

Qualified: Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay

North & Central America + Caribbean

The host nations USA, Canada and Mexico qualified automatically. Three further spots were awarded through several qualification rounds.

Asia played across 5 rounds and provides 9 participants in total.

Africa played in 9 groups. Group winners qualified directly, one further spot went via play-off.
