Africa's Playoff Drama: DR Congo, Gabon and Mali in the Race for the Last WM 2030 Ticket

21.10.2026 13:00 WC Qualification

The football world's attention is already turning to the next major tournament: the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. However, it is important to distinguish between the already confirmed framework and the still open qualification. Morocco, Portugal and Spain are automatically qualified as hosts; Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay also qualify automatically due to the three matches taking place there for the 100th FIFA World Cup anniversary. How exactly the remaining African spots will be allocated is currently not yet determined. An overview of all continents can be found on the page for WM 2030 Qualification.

Unlike in the original text, the CAF cannot currently be described with a confirmed qualification mode for 2030. The system known from the 2026 World Cup qualification consisted of nine African groups. The nine group winners qualified directly for the World Cup, while the four best runners-up contested an African playoff tournament for a spot in the intercontinental FIFA playoff. This procedure applies to the 2026 World Cup, not automatically to the 2030 World Cup. Details on the current status and all known information can be found in the overview of 2030 World Cup Qualification in Africa.

DR Congo nevertheless belongs to the most interesting African teams with regard to the upcoming World Cup cycle. At the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the "Leopards" reached the semi-finals and lost there to later tournament runner-up Ivory Coast. Chancel Mbemba and Cédric Bakambu were among the defining names of the team. Under coach Sébastien Desabre, the team developed into a competitive selection that also made waves in the 2026 World Cup qualification.

For DR Congo, the road to the 2026 World Cup ended particularly dramatically: After finishing second in their qualifying group, the team prevailed against Cameroon in the African playoff tournament and then defeated Nigeria in the final after a penalty shootout. This earned DR Congo a spot in the intercontinental playoff tournament for the 2026 World Cup. However, this is not an already secured playoff status for the 2030 World Cup.

Gabon, in turn, also counts among Africa's established teams. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains one of the most well-known figures in Gabonese football. In the 2026 World Cup qualification, Gabon finished second in their group and thus qualified for the African playoff tournament. However, the "Panthers" failed already in the semi-finals, losing 1:4 after extra time to Nigeria.

Mali also remains a team with considerable potential. The "Eagles" have players such as Yves Bissouma, Amadou Haidara and Lassine Sinayoko, offering a mix of international experience and offensive quality. At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Mali reached the quarter-finals: After a victory on penalties against Tunisia, the quarter-finals against Senegal proved to be the end of the road. Mali has not yet reached a World Cup final tournament.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, has now concluded. Senegal won the final against host Morocco 1:0 after extra time. For the 2030 World Cup, the tournament can therefore serve primarily as a current barometer for the strength of African national teams. A close look at the upcoming matchdays is worthwhile on the 2030 World Cup Qualification Schedule.

Fun Fact on the Side: Morocco made history at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final and the first CAF team to do so. In 2030, the country will play a special role again as one of three host nations. However, the World Cup will not be held exclusively in Africa: In addition to Morocco, Spain and Portugal are the main hosts, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay each host one match for the 100th World Cup anniversary.

Who will take to the field from Africa alongside host Morocco at the 2030 World Cup cannot currently be predicted based on a confirmed CAF qualification system. DR Congo, Gabon and Mali are undoubtedly among the teams that should be watched. However, there is currently no concrete African playoff race between these three nations for the 2030 World Cup. Once FIFA and CAF officially determine the qualification path, the race for African World Cup spots can be better assessed.
