In 1968 the tournament was called the European Championship for the first time. Hosts Italy reached the final on the toss of a coin after a goalless semi-final against the Soviet Union. The final in Rome against Yugoslavia ended 1–1 after extra time and was replayed two days later – Italy won 2–0 with goals from Gigi Riva and Pietro Anastasi. It remains the only replayed final in the competition’s history.
