Euro 1976 in Yugoslavia was the first major tournament decided by a penalty shoot-out. In the final in Belgrade, West Germany equalised for 2–2 through Bernd Hölzenbein in the last minute, but after extra time Uli Hoeneß missed his spot kick. Antonín Panenka chipped the decisive penalty to win it 5–3 for Czechoslovakia – the “Panenka” has carried his name ever since.
