At Euro 1988 in West Germany, the Netherlands beat the hosts 2–1 in the semi-final in Hamburg. In the final in Munich against the Soviet Union, Ruud Gullit headed the opener and Marco van Basten made it 2–0 with a volley from a tight angle – one of the most famous goals in the tournament’s history. It is still the Netherlands’ only major title.
