Denmark had not even qualified for Euro 1992 in Sweden and only took the place of Yugoslavia, excluded because of the war, ten days before the tournament. The Danes knocked out holders the Netherlands on penalties in the semi-final and beat world champions Germany 2–0 in the final in Gothenburg. It was the last European Championship with only eight teams.
