Euro 1996 in England was the first with 16 teams. Germany knocked out the hosts on penalties in the semi-final at Wembley. In the final against the Czech Republic they fell behind to a penalty before Oliver Bierhoff equalised and then scored the first golden goal in the tournament’s history in extra time to win 2–1 – Germany’s third European title.
